Seasonal highlights
Nestled north of Lucca lies the charming village of Benabbio, one of my favorite hidden gems in Tuscany. It's not just because of the two excellent trattorias you'll find there, but also because of its breathtaking location amidst ancient chestnut forests that turn a vibrant yellow and orange during the fall season. Join me on a journey to discover the autumn wonders of Benabbio.
The road to Benabbio is an adventure in itself. As you drive from the Devil's Bridge to Bagni di Lucca, you'll be following the meandering Lima River. Just as you're about to leave Bagni di Lucca behind, the road suddenly climbs steeply towards Benabbio, offering you overwhelming panoramic views. Along this narrow road, you'll have a fantastic vantage point to admire Bagno Alto, the historic heart of Bagni di Lucca.
Upon arriving in Benabbio, you can conveniently park near the church, where you'll also find
the Alimentari (grocery store) and the first trattoria, Chavallo di Bianco. A bit further up the
village, you'll encounter the second trattoria, Aquolina in bocca.
From the church, you can
embark on a substantial hike (about two hours) to Castello di Benabbio, requiring a good
level of fitness. Alternatively, you can drive up, but doing so means missing the climb along
the steep, ancient steps of Benabbio, a unique experience.
The upper part of Benabbio can only be reached on foot, and I highly recommend it. From
the highest point, you'll be treated to unbelievably beautiful views of Benabbio with its olive
groves and the Apuan Alps in the distance. Beyond the last house, follow the road into the
forest towards Castello.
While the castle itself has mostly disappeared, the church, Chiesa di
San Michele, still stands proudly. From the church, several hiking trails lead further into the
hills. Especially in autumn when the ancient chestnut forests don their golden and orange
hues, the scenery is nothing short of magical.
Benabbio in autumn is a Tuscan dream come true. It's a place where you can immerse
yourself in the vibrant colors of the season, savor delicious local cuisine, and embark on
unforgettable hikes through ancient forests. See also my blog about autumn in Lucca.
Don't miss the opportunity to experience the
enchantment of Benabbio during this magical time of year.
