Italian Dining: My Five Favorite Trattoria's Beyond Lucca's Walls

Local Food

When it comes to savoring authentic Italian flavors that have been passed down through generations, trattorias are the hidden gems that truly capture the essence of family dining. While Lucca itself offers a multitude of culinary delights, some of the finest trattorias lie just beyond its historical walls.

In this amazing journey, we'll explore some of the region's most cherished trattorias, each offering remarkable quality at remarkably affordable prices.

Dive in to uncover the cherished spots recommended by our Italian neighbors. All of them we tried in the last years, most of them several times, and they were right. Send us your favorites, it would be great to add new ones to the list. And write a new blog!

Da Sandrino, Pescia

Venturing into the hills near Pescia, also called the Swiss of Tuscany, Da Sandrino holds the title of "best in the region" among locals. The exceptional quality of the food leaves a lasting impression, and the cheerful ambiance upon settling the bill only adds to the experience.

With its picturesque surroundings, a visit to Da Sandrino can seamlessly blend into a roadtrip or a leisurely Sunday afternoon stroll. The roadtrip from Lucca is beautiful, don't forget to pay Pescia and her flower market a visit.

Funuculi, Lucca near the walls

For aficionados of the Neapolitan pizza, Funuculi offers an irresistible reason to venture just outside Lucca's city walls. While the modern setting might lack the charm of the historic center, the superb service and Lucca's finest pizzas more than compensate. An absolute must-try is the Calzone Vesuvio, particularly if you're fond of a fiery kick in your cuisine. Or the racchetta, with fresh ham, tomatos and rucola. Both are my favorites.

Acquolina In Bocca, Bennabio

Acquolina In Bocca presents an irresistible array of Italian delicacies – from pizzas to pollo grilliato, bistecca to freshly crafted pasta. The name aptly translates to "mouthwatering," a promise that is more than fulfilled with each bite. Wood-fired pizzas add a distinct flavor, they are the best in the region. A mother, son and daughter run this local restaurant. Which many tourists are able to find due to good reviews. Homemade desserts are the cherry on top of a sumptuous meal. Don't forget the cake with wallnuts and Nutella or the tiramisu.

La Picola Enotaca, Montecarlo

Overlooking the rolling hills of Tuscany in Montecarlo Toscana, La Picola Enotaca offers not only a fantastic view but also a peek into the owner's charming disagreements with his wife, which can be quite entertaining. They have good food, but even better wines and special beers. Also a good spot for apperetivo. This destination can get busy during the summer, so reserving a table is advisable. However, during off-peak seasons, finding a spot is a breeze.

Trattoria Borghesi, Bagni di Lucca

Hidden discreetly behind a shop front, Trattoria Borghesi in Bagni di Lucca caters to locals and those in-the-know. While the ambiance might not be its strong suit, the focus here is on the exceptional cuisine, showcasing the true essence of local flavors. If you want to eat good food, mingle with the locals, get that real Italian experience. This is the place to be. Combine it with a visit to Bagni di Lucca and the Devils Bridge (see my other blogs).

There are just too many good ones

I have to stop naming more good trattoria's. Five was the maximum but there are so many more I would like to mention. I am sorry there are simply to many good restaurants. I probably have not seen and tried them all yet. For example there is a local trattoria named "Aldo" near Collodi which seems to be very good. Their pasta with fresh "Porcini" from the surrounding forests, seems to be the best. This one is still on the list, as many others. Send us your favorites, so we can make a nex blog. There are two more restaurants I would like to mention.

La Taverna de Imiracoli da Mangiafuoco, Collodi

A restaurant that might be overlooked at first glance, La taverna dei miracoli Da Mangiafuoco in Collodi always has its parking lot brimming with Italian license plates. This is always a good sign. Translated it means "The Tavern of Miracles", it certainly lives up to it's name. The food here is undoubtedly remarkable, nice owner who will make you feel home. With great pasta dishes and fish that will have you savoring every bite. Good spot while visiting Collodi and Villa Garzoni and her gardens (see my other blog).

New Hong Kong, Lucca near the walls

While the allure of Italian pasta and pizza is undeniable, there are moments when a change of flavors is desired. In those instances, we often turn to a fusion of cultures, creating dishes such as “Dutch” food with a Tuscan twist in our own kitchen, thanks to the addition of salsiccia Toscana.

And for an entirely different culinary journey, New Hong Kong, just outside Lucca's walls, offers a taste of Asia. They have good Chinese food, if you are in for a change of flavors.

In conclusion, the trattorias beyond Lucca's walls offer an authentic journey into Italian cuisine that goes beyond the surface. These cherished family-run restaurants carry a legacy of flavors, traditions, and stories that enrich every bite.

So, the next time you find yourself in Lucca, make sure to step beyond the walls and embark on a culinary adventure that's truly unforgettable.
