Nestled in the picturesque hills around Lucca lies a treasure trove of historic villas waiting to be explored. Having personally traversed many of them, like Villa Torrigianni, I can attest to their timeless charm. And while I have a few more on my "to-do" list, these splendid estates offer a captivating journey through time.

These villas, dating from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century, served as the summer retreats for Lucca's most illustrious families. It all began in the early 1500s when the prosperous silk merchants decided to invest in land, giving birth to a collection of villas that dot the Tuscan landscape. Each villa in Lucca is a masterpiece in its own right, boasting a unique identity and character.

As you explore these enchanting estates, you'll be captivated by their grandeur. Vast gardens, graceful arcades, opulent banquet halls, breathtaking frescoes, statues, monumental pools, and serene ponds—all of these elements combine to create a symphony of beauty, each villa with its own distinct notes.

Among the renowned villas gracing Lucca's countryside, Villa Torrigianni, Villa Mansi, Villa Reale di Marlia, Villa Grabau, Villa Bernardini, and Villa Oliva stand as shining examples. Additionally, a short journey to Collodi leads to Villa Garzoni.

While you can't tour Villa Garzoni itself, you can explore the captivating Garzoni gardens and a delightful butterfly garden. Don't forget to wander through the charming village nestled behind the villa, a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

All these remarkable villas are conveniently situated just 20 minutes from Lucca, making them accessible for day trips filled with history, art, and natural beauty. However, there's one villa that doesn't require a journey into the countryside.

Palazzo Pfanner, an exception to the villa trail, is located within Lucca's historic center. Its unique history is reflected in its name – a German family who introduced beer to Italy several generations ago acquired it. Be sure to check the opening hours, especially during the off-season, as they may vary.

For an unforgettable experience, consider renting a scooter in Lucca and embarking on a road trip to explore these magnificent villas. The journey will take you through the breathtaking hills, offering panoramic vistas of Lucca and the surrounding countryside.

One of the most charming routes leads from Lucca to Collodi. Whether you're behind the wheel of a car or cruising on a scooter, this journey promises a delightful blend of natural beauty and historic treasures.

Begin your adventure with a visit to the enchanting Garzoni Gardens in Collodi, or perhaps indulge in a leisurely cup of Italian coffee to energize you for the road ahead. As you set off, take the via della colle, a winding road that offers a splendid view of Villa Garzoni, a true Tuscan gem.

Continue your journey towards San Genarro, where you'll pass by Palazzo Bove and Palazzo Buonvisi, elegant historic residences that whisper tales of bygone eras. The road then leads you to Petrognano, offering breathtaking vistas of Lucca and the vineyards of local fattoria (farms) as far as the eye can see.



Navigate the scenic winding roads towards Tofori, where you'll encounter more architectural wonders, including the renowned Villa Torrigiani and Villa Mansi. The road then takes you higher, towards Matraia, offering sweeping panoramas of the Tuscan countryside.

From Matraia, descend along via Matraia, and your route will take you past Villa Grabau, Villa Oliva, and ultimately, Villa Reale di Marlia. These splendid villas, each with its own unique character and history, are sure to captivate your imagination.

As you bid farewell to Villa Reale di Marlia, drive through San Pietro a Vico as you make your way back towards Lucca. Along this scenic return route, you'll have ample opportunities to savor the memories of your journey, soaking in the beauty of the Tuscan countryside.

So, whether you're a history buff, an art enthusiast, or simply in search of natural beauty, Lucca's villa trail promises an enchanting journey through a tapestry of Italian heritage. I did not visit all of them yet, but the gardens of Villa Garzoni, Villa Torrigiani and villa Reale di Marlia I can strongly recommend.

Hire a Vespa for the authentic Italian vibe, and book your tickets for Villa Reale upfront. The other villa's are less busy, you can get tickets at the entrance.
