Lucca, with its charming streets and picturesque squares, is a true Italian gem. While many visitors are drawn to its historic beauty, there's another aspect of Lucca that deserves just as much attention – its culinary delights. On this gastronomic adventure, we'll explore some of the finest restaurants in Lucca, both within the ancient city walls.
Our culinary journey begins in the heart of Lucca's Centro Historico at Ristorante Buca di Sant'Antonio. This iconic eatery boasts a rich history dating back to 1782 and offers a delightful blend of traditional Tuscan cuisine with a modern twist. Savory dishes like the famous "Tordelli Lucchesi" (local pasta) and a stellar wine selection make this restaurant a must-visit. We often go here with friends visiting us from abroad, since it is classic Tuscan style.
For those who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, Cyclo da Divino is the place to be. Nestled in a quiet corner of Lucca, on a little piazza near the old gate this restaurant serves good meals and wines and is all about cycling. Always a buzz at the terraces on this small piazza. We often go here for a drink and some antipasti after shopping in Lucca.
Venture beyond the city walls to discover Trattoria da Leo, a beloved establishment known for its friendly service and delicious fare. Here, you'll find an array of Tuscan specialties. Don't forget to ask for a local wine recommendation to complete your meal. This place we often visit during lunch time. Be on time since it is always fully booked and the terrace is small. In the evening with the little lights on, it is perfect for Romantic dining.
If you're seeking a tranquil setting for your dining experience, near porta Elisa, Gli Orti di Via Elisa is the perfect choice. This restaurant is known for its lush outdoor seating, has a small terrace near the old gate and an innovative menu that showcases seasonal ingredients. The "Risotto ai Funghi Porcini" is a true delight for mushroom lovers. You will easily pass this place but it is more than worthwhile
This family restaurant with a long history serves good tuscan food. Antipasti, pasta’s and other traditional Italian meals. Most special is the romantic setting of the terrace, near the trattoria. Near the walls in an old open (former) warehouse. Especially during the evening, with romantic lights it is our favorite spot in Lucca. Have a good meal and afterwards stroll around the walls of Lucca .
Another option is to do a guided walking tour for foodies. Try local specialties like Buccatello and Tordelli. Visit local restaurants, cafes and historic eateries. The tastings will depend on the day’s best produce. All local and daily fresh products. Cerina, a typical focaccia which I love so much, different kind of meat, cheese, chard, and mortadella, dressed with meat sauce or with oil and cacio cheese and end with Italian Gelato.
While it's true that Lucca's Centro Historico offers enchanting dining options, don't hesitate to venture beyond the walls to discover even more culinary treasures. From historic landmarks to hidden gems, Lucca's restaurant scene is a testament to the rich gastronomic heritage of Tuscany. So, indulge in the flavors of Lucca and let your taste buds savor the essence of this charming Italian city. Mangiare bene! (Eat well!)
